Bride Groom Confetti shot outside the Guildhall in Bath

This beautiful autumn wedding took place at Bailbrook house at the end of November (hence the beautiful Christmas decorations) and was a day full of excitement, but not just of the good kind.

I started my work in the morning when seeing the bride Lucy and her girlfriends getting ready at her parents house. Lucy’s parents had only just moved to Bath and part of the house was a building site, it was very easy to see the house’s great potential (apologies, I used to be an architect in my previous job). Sam from Bath Bridal Hair created a very soft and feminine look that went extremely well with the backless wedding dress and special jewellery. Also the family cat decided to lend itself for a very special photograph of the bride’s jewellery.

“Just wanted to say a big thank you for all your effort on Saturday. We had a fantastic day and we’re really grateful for your support throughout! We both felt really at ease and comfortable and the pictures look great!”

As soon as I headed over to Bailbrook House it became apparent that something terrible had happened. It turned out that Lucy’s grandfather had fallen out of his wheelchair and landed on his head in the carpark. He suffered a bad head injury and spent a significant amount of time on the ice cold ground (it was a weekend of icy November storms). Thankfully two of the guests were trained nurses, he was quickly patched up, scooped in and warmed up. Despite the shock he was in excellent spirits and managed to still enjoy the wedding ceremony, despite blood running down the side of his face.

The relief that he was actually fine filtered right through into the drinks reception as people were extremely happy and joyful. Sadly the windy weather made outdoor group portraits rather difficult so we only did a small amount of photos outside in a wind shaded area and instead had fun with the friends group shot inside.

Tom and Lucy chose to have a a casino for their evening celebrations – the guests loved it!

The wedding breakfast soon went underway in the cloisters, followed by some heart felt and witty speeches. Have you ever heard of the book ‘how to be a good wife’ (written in the 1930s)? It makes for excellent laughs in a speech!

The most joyful element of the day by far was the evening casino – one roulette table, one black jack table and a custom drinks bar setup in the Charlotte Room. Needless to say the guests had a great time playing and I had an even better time photographing animated faces.

Summer Wedding at the Guildhall & Bathwick Boatman

Summer Wedding at the Guildhall & Bathwick Boatman

Bride Groom Confetti shot outside the Guildhall in Bath

After a string of very small weddings (due to covid restrictions), this was my first bigger wedding since the end of 2019 and what am absolute beauty it was, on every single level! The sun was shining (after many weeks of annoying cold and rain), the hotel was spectacular (thank you Queensberry), the bride and her bridesmaids were stunning, the Morris Minor put its roof down and the champagne was flowing during the boat cruise. Heaven!

I met Ed and Africa six years ago when I photographed Doug and Nicole’s wedding on my birthday (Ed was the best man). Ed and Africa had only just started dating then and I knew both Ed as well as Doug through my husband. I love when you photograph friends of friends, it is almost guaranteed that you are all on the same wave length and get on brilliantly!

Fun fact: Ed and Africa had the same surname BEFORE getting married! What are the chances?

Many couple choose to get married at The guildhall, followed by ride on the Pulteney Cruiser up river Avon to either Bathampton Mill or the Bathwick Boatman for their wedding celebrations.

Africa, the mothers and the bridesmaid were getting ready at the beautiful Queensberry Hotel and I arrived in good time to photograph not only the preparations, but also the wedding dress, the bride’s shoes (in front of the most funky wallpaper) as well as the three beautiful green bridesmaids dresses. The Queensberry Hotel is not only extremely central, but also very stylish, light and photogenic. Once everyone was ready the bridesmaids took off and I travelled with the bride and her dad in a beautiful 1960s Morris Minor. We stopped at the Circus for some photographs before heading to the Guidhall to get married.

Betty photographed my wedding, there’s no doubt that she is exceptional at what she does. Professional, subtle and she paid attention to the small but important details. We are so pleased with the photos Betty took, they are exactly what we wanted and hoped for. Thank you, Betty!

After a short, but sweet wedding ceremony in the Alkmaar Room we spend half an hour in Parade Gardens for various group shots, before heading over to the weir to enter the Pulteney Princess, a river cruiser that takes you all the way from the weir to the Bathampton Mill. Watch out for herons and kingfishers along the river banks!

Ed and Africa had chosen the Bathwick Boatman as their wedding venue and after an hour on the boat that is where we departed. The Bathwick Boatman is ideal for weddings up to thirty guests. The outdoor area is included in the hire and makes for another excellent portrait background.

Multi-Cultural Guyers House Wedding Photography

Multi-Cultural Guyers House Wedding Photography

Sue and Angelo were the wonderful bride and groom at this a fabulous culturally mixed wedding last October. Sue who is Chinese and Angelo, who is Italian-English, took elements of both of their traditions to create a beautiful and memorable day.

I met with the couple at Guyers House, a truly spectacular venue, a few months prior to discuss the plans for the celebration which would involve not one, but two wedding ceremonies! Sue and Angelo would first have an English ceremony, including all the usual aspects; a white dress, the walk up the aisle, a ring exchange, and then the couple would go and prepare for the next part of the day where they would enjoy a traditional Chinese tea ceremony and would both wear stunning, ornate wedding outfits in red, which is the colour of good fortune, vitality and happiness.
The bride’s two outfits as well as the groom’s Chinese outfit for the tea ceremony.
On the day of the wedding, as always I arrived early; I like to use this time to walk around the grounds to revisit my planned photo locations and assess any new options before the hubbub of the day begins.  This preparation gives me the chance to consider the weather conditions, the colours and textures of the planting, the light and all the aspects that will play a part in the composition of my photos.

My thoughts were crystallised by the time I started unloading my equipment and set up ready to start photographing the bride’s preparations. Sue had her mum as well as Angelo’s mum and sister there to help her get ready and of course to offer support at this special but emotional time. Angelo had chosen his brother to be his best man and I think he did an outstanding job with the right balance of humour and distraction which eased Angelo’s nerves as he got himself ready for the day ahead.

“In a traditional Chinese tea ceremony the couple both wear stunning, ornate wedding outfits in red, which is the colour of good fortune, vitality and happiness.”

A marriage of cultures at Guyers House

The wedding ceremony was really beautiful with Sue and Angelo both crying tears of happiness. Sue’s mum was very emotional and all the parents were clearly extremely proud. To me, tears at a time like this show how much people care, these moments should always be treated respectfully but should in my mind always be acknowledged, they are a true reflection of the love shared and there’s no shame in that!

Following English ceremony the drinks reception took place outside in the grounds, where I photographed the guests showering the couple with confetti. The couple headed off for their  outfit change ready for the Chinese tea ceremony.

Guyers House Wedding Photography

The detail in the bride’s and groom’s clothes was incredibly intricate and both looked stunning and so that the Chinese family members unable to make the trip overseas for the wedding could wish the couple well, the tea ceremony was streamed on social media. What a wonderful example of ancient custom marrying perfectly with modern technology, just like the two cultures of the couple joining in union that day.  As part of the ceremony it’s tradition for the bride’s parents to give a golden ring to the groom and a golden bangle to the bride. Sue’s mum found it quite hard to get the ring onto Angelo’s finger and I took the opportunity to capture this very entertaining moment.  I think it is little interactions like this that not only make a great photo but that deepen connections between the new family members and that will be remembered long after the wedding day itself has concluded.

After photographing the pretty flowers and delicious cakes at the wedding breakfast, Sue changed back into her white wedding dress we set off for a few quiet moments to take some  photos of the couple. They are both caring, romantic people so I am really pleased that the shots of them together under the umbrellas and the portraits in the neighbouring farmer’s field capture that so naturally.

The evening party started first with the cake cutting followed by the first dance with everyone taking part in the wonderful celebrations; but the show was definitely stolen by Angelo’s gorgeous, glamorous Italian granny who totally rocked the dance floor!

Striking Wedding Ring Detail Photography

Striking Wedding Ring Detail Photography

A circle has no beginning or end, and is therefore a symbol of infinity. It is endless, eternal, just the way love should be. For many, the wedding ring is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand. This is because the vein in this finger was believed to lead directly to the wearer’s heart.

Today is leap day which is also known as Bachelor’s Day or Ladies’ Privilege. This is an Irish tradition by which women are allowed to propose to men on Leap Day, 29 February, based on a legend of Saint Bridget and Saint Patrick. I thought you might like this fun fact about leap day.

So today I am dedicating a whole blog post wedding rings. Once thing you will not know unless I have photographed your wedding is that I don’t really sit down during a wedding phoot for longer than it takes me to eat a meal (so not long). While you and your guests eat I usually use my time to photograph wedding bouquets, wedding decorations, the wedding venue and, you have guessed it, the wedding rings. Personally I love jewellery and I send a huge thank your too all my amazing couples for light heartedly parting with their precious new jewelry for me to photograph it while it’s still new, shiny and not scratched.

I placed this ring on a pretty embroidered pillow I found during the bridal preparations.

Taking good detail photographs is not difficult when you know how to. Looking for good natural light as well as interesting backdrops and textures is key. So is a good macro lens so you can get really close.

But I also like to have a little bit of fun with the rings. I especially like to use them in combination with any other important items, like the wedding bouquet, the cake toppers, the wedding stationary or any other special decorations.

According to tradition, the marriage is doomed if the groom drops the ring during the ceremony.

I have personally never witnessed anyone dropping a ring during the ceremony, but I have seen many rings that didn’t want to get onto the fingers (probably due to nervously sticky fingers) and one time the best man had actually forgotten the rings in his hotel. Needless to day those facial expressions were priceless. But that is for another blog post.

Occasionally incredible things happen. A few years back I photographed a summer weddings and, as usual, used the wedding reception to go outside and photograph the rings. I found a small garden area in the courtyard with a fairly old and rugged looking stone sculpture sitting in it’s middle. I though the texture would make a great backdrop for the macro shot and only when I placed the rings on top of the sculpture did I notice the stream of tiny spiders crawling all over the stone. Once I had placed the rings I waited patiently to see what would happen and it wasn’t long before the spiders started crawling all over the rings. I took quite a few pictures, but one stood out to me as the little spider reached it’s tiny leg up towards the sky and this was my shot of the day.

The spider on the stone.

Wedding rings have been said to have curative properties. For instance, in 19th century Ireland, rubbing a wedding ring on an injury or sore was thought to heal it. They also believed that pricking a wart with a gooseberry thorn through a wedding ring would make the wart disappear. In Somerset, they thought that rubbing your wedding ring on sore eyes would remove any infection. It’s a good job we know better today, as wedding rings may carry germs if they are not cleaned often!

The perfect shot for a thank you card.

Clifton College Bristol Wedding Photography

Clifton College Bristol Wedding Photography

Lydia and Andrew’s wedding at Clifton College in Bristol was special for a unique reason: Lydia is one of three siblings and I photographed all of their weddings! First Karis and Will’s wedding at Folly Farm in July 2014 and then Colette and Ed’s wedding at Aldwick Court Farm in April this year.

So needless to say, I was excited to meet Lydia’s family for the third time and to photograph stunning Clifton College for the first time.

Although it was mid-July the weather sadly didn’t cooperate, and the forecast was light rain – not ideal for an outdoor wedding ceremony! To my joy Andrew was undeterred though and proceeded with the plans for the outdoor ceremony.

After a short site visit I headed over to the Marriott Hotel Bristol to capture the bride getting ready. Lizzy Westney did an amazing job getting the girls ready. Once Lydia was ready we both rushed back to Clifton College and the ceremony started immediately. Yes, it was windy and yes, it was raining a little, but this did not stop the lovebirds from having an amazing and emotional time. Never have I seen a couple skip back down the aisle together, you could see it was pure joy (and a little relief I guess).

Sorry we were out the other night, so didn’t get chance to look through them but I have now and they are wonderful!! Absolutely love them. It was such good fun reliving what was such a fabulous day for us! Also, love the pics of you at the end! You have been to more Harris family weddings than you can shake a stick at!!

Thankfully the rain stopped, and everyone enjoyed the drinks reception outside, followed by the wedding breakfast inside the (grand hall). I think I have written about this before, my favourite part during weddings are the bride and groom portrait shoot and the speeches. The latter yet again didn’t disappoint with an enormous number of speakers: bride’s mum and dad, bride’s uncle, groom’s dad, bride and groom, and last but not least the best man! It felt fabulous to get a mention by the bride since it was third time lucky (see first paragraph). Ready for food, everyone enjoyed a few hours of socialising, followed by the first dance and joyful celebrations. And if you look carefully, you might even see me on one of the images!
