My 100 best wedding photos from 2021

And I’m not going to lie – this was a strange post-pandemic year!

How to sum up a busy year after a year as hard as 2020? I’m a little lost for words.

Most of my 2020 bookings moved to 2021; some of them got pushed even further to 2022 for a variety of reasons, mostly uncertainty and ongoing travel problems. At the same time a global pandemic seems to have caused people to stop procrastinating. As a consequence I had a lot of last minute bookings for small and microweddings.

Being a wedding photographer or in fact any wedding supplier in 2021 was hard work, as we tried to cram two years of work into one. I’m not trying to be ungrateful as I enjoyed every wedding I photographed this year. But it was tiring, particularly since we started the year emotionally drained already. It was my couple’s joy, their family’s happiness ad te vibrancy of the celebrations that carried us all through!

But with every bad comes so much good!

Having said all that, the emotional strain from 2020 has made almost all weddings this year to much sweeter and more truthful! And this filtered through into all the photograph I have taken. I have witnessed and captured many moments of people getting together for the first time since the worldwide lockdown and consequently many happy tears were shed. and many excellent parties celebrated ;)!

With every bad comes so much good – we are more present than ever, we hug our family members that little bit longer and we enjoy get togethers – like weddings – so much more!

So here are around 100 of my favourite photos from my favourite wedding venues, amongst others Eggbeer Farm, Bailbrook House, the Assembly Rooms, the Roman Baths and Priston Mill – I hope you enjoy them! xx

“Betty photographed our wedding at the Bath Assembly Rooms in July and was perfect throughout the entire process. Our first meeting (virtual due to COVID) really put us at ease as Betty took on all our requests and went above and beyond making suggestions on all sorts of details of the day as we had very little wedding experience! Ahead of the wedding, she travelled to meet us at the venue, again giving some fantastic suggestions and helping us visualise the day.
On the day, I can’t state how brilliant Betty was. She was never ‘in the way’ or imposing, meaning some great candid shots, but also was excellent at organising ourselves and guests for some group shots and portraits. Had lovely positive comments from many of the guests as well. The end result was a simply stunning gallery of photos. I could not have asked for anything more – everything was absolutely perfect!

Bride Groom Confetti shot outside the Guildhall in Bath

Tom and Tash’s wedding was one the many 2020 weddings that had to be postponed. Luckily when it came round to their September wedding, all Covid restrictions had been lifted and allowed them to go ahead with their large wedding celebrations.

I first met Tom in 2018 when he was best man at Becky and Chris’s wedding in Badminton. Consequently it was a wonderful surprise he contacted me a year later to announce that he was engaged himself and wanted me to photograph his and Tash’s wedding in Badminton, Gloucester.

groom and groom at the roman baths wedding in bath

Tom the groom grew up on a farm in Gloucester. For their wedding celebrations they set up a large marquee in a field behind the farm.

Tash was getting ready in her parents house which was only half an hour drive from the church. I have to admit I love it when a bride gets ready in her childhood home as the place is usually filled with loads of photos and the bride is that much more relaxed while getting ready. Tash not only had her sister, her mum and her best friend around her, but also her horse Otter who came to pay a visit and to pose for a few photos.

The wedding ceremony took place in Badminton Church which is one of a kind with it’s high pews (once seated you can barely look over the top) and large stained glass windows. We had an almost full house (not that you could actually see that with the high pews), the weather was spectacular and the groom and his mates in excellent spirits.

“Thank you so so much for this – we absolutely love the photos and so exciting to get them back and re-live the day!

From Badminton Church it was only a five minute drive to Cape Farm, Tom’s childhood home. They had set up a large marquee at the back of the farm as well as many bell tents for guests to stay in. I openly admit, I truly love a summer marquee wedding! The light inside a marquee is generally very good as the canvas acts as a large light diffuser (which is a good thing). Also the space, freedom and countryside views help a lot when arranging large group portraits.

Let’s also not forget the cherry picker. Similarly to Becky and Chris’ wedding in 2018, the farm provided me with a cherry picker to be able to take a group shot from high above. I am not scared of height, no not at all so this wasn’t the slightest bit challenging for me (wink wink). Always the pro I rose to the occasion and got lifted up high, catching a wonderful photos of all 150 wedding guests as well as the marquee set in the countryside.

Speeches took place before the almost 200 guests got seated and the evening was filled with a disco and live band which did not fail to pull everyone onto the dance floor and allow me to shoot some pretty funny pictures of the guests having a great time.

Berwick Lodge Wedding Photography with Emilie & Tom

Berwick Lodge Wedding Photography with Emilie & Tom

Bride Groom Confetti shot outside the Guildhall in Bath

Berwick Lodge is one of those venues that has it all: beautiful room for the bridal party to get ready in, a large dedicated ceremony room and beautiful grounds around the property that can be used for the drinks reception as well as the group photos.

I like to arrive at a wedding venue in good time to ensure I can have a good lock around before starting with the preparation photos. This also gives me a chance to speak to the wedding coordinator, find the groom (who will most likely not be in his room) and check the gardens for seasonal highlights.

groom and groom at the roman baths wedding in bath

What a way to finish of a successful wedding day – with a cigar in the sunshine!

Emilie had a fantastic gaggle of girls around her including mum, sister and niece. At the end it is always hand on from everyone to get the bride into her dress, adjust hair and complete the finishing touches. And while Tom did not know how to iron a shirt, his mates quickly came to the rescue by googling tutorials and doing the job for him.

The ceremony started off with a big laugh when the page boy promptly decided he didn’t want to lead the way down the aisle and instead only walk directly behind the bridesmaid (his mum). You could see that the groom was wondering why the music had started playing but no one was coming in! No, the bide had not changed her mind!

“Thank you so much for the photos, they looks great! Also we just wanted to say a huge thank you again, we’ve had so many compliments about you and how you were on our special day!

Apart from the false start, the ceremony was short, sweet and tears filled. As soon as the couple walked out into the open they were greeted by the biggest confetti explosion! This moment is always so much fun to photograph!

The guests enjoyed a sun filled drinks reception in the garden, followed by group pictures and individual bride and groom portraits. As I like to interfere with the day as little as possible, I generally leave the bride and groom portraits until the end of the drinks reception and instigate them just before the guests are asked inside. This way the couple don’t miss any time with their guests but instead make the most of the long time it takes 60 people to finish their drinks, go inside and find their seats.

The speeches following the wedding breakfast were particularly good and Tom’s dad as well as Emilie’s siblings did not leave out any chance to both embarrass as well as cherish the bride and groom.

Following a break, drinks and cigars in the evening sunshine, the wedding guests settled into an evening disco and leisurely party in the venue’s grounds.

Summer Wedding at the Guildhall & Bathwick Boatman

Summer Wedding at the Guildhall & Bathwick Boatman

Bride Groom Confetti shot outside the Guildhall in Bath

After a string of very small weddings (due to covid restrictions), this was my first bigger wedding since the end of 2019 and what am absolute beauty it was, on every single level! The sun was shining (after many weeks of annoying cold and rain), the hotel was spectacular (thank you Queensberry), the bride and her bridesmaids were stunning, the Morris Minor put its roof down and the champagne was flowing during the boat cruise. Heaven!

I met Ed and Africa six years ago when I photographed Doug and Nicole’s wedding on my birthday (Ed was the best man). Ed and Africa had only just started dating then and I knew both Ed as well as Doug through my husband. I love when you photograph friends of friends, it is almost guaranteed that you are all on the same wave length and get on brilliantly!

Fun fact: Ed and Africa had the same surname BEFORE getting married! What are the chances?

groom and groom at the roman baths wedding in bath

Many couple choose to get married at The guildhall, followed by ride on the Pulteney Cruiser up river Avon to either Bathampton Mill or the Bathwick Boatman for their wedding celebrations.

Africa, the mothers and the bridesmaid were getting ready at the beautiful Queensberry Hotel and I arrived in good time to photograph not only the preparations, but also the wedding dress, the bride’s shoes (in front of the most funky wallpaper) as well as the three beautiful green bridesmaids dresses. The Queensberry Hotel is not only extremely central, but also very stylish, light and photogenic. Once everyone was ready the bridesmaids took off and I travelled with the bride and her dad in a beautiful 1960s Morris Minor. We stopped at the Circus for some photographs before heading to the Guidhall to get married.

Betty photographed my wedding, there’s no doubt that she is exceptional at what she does. Professional, subtle and she paid attention to the small but important details. We are so pleased with the photos Betty took, they are exactly what we wanted and hoped for. Thank you, Betty!

After a short, but sweet wedding ceremony in the Alkmaar Room we spend half an hour in Parade Gardens for various group shots, before heading over to the weir to enter the Pulteney Princess, a river cruiser that takes you all the way from the weir to the Bathampton Mill. Watch out for herons and kingfishers along the river banks!

Ed and Africa had chosen the Bathwick Boatman as their wedding venue and after an hour on the boat that is where we departed. The Bathwick Boatman is ideal for weddings up to thirty guests. The outdoor area is included in the hire and makes for another excellent portrait background.

Tips for planning a small wedding in Bath

Tips for planning a small wedding in Bath

rain wedding day photography
With light on the horizon in form of several vaccines many people will ask themselves if they will (finally) be able to get married in 2021 and a lot of those couples will choose to plan a small wedding to ensure they can go ahead with it without too much fear to have to postpone (again).
I have photographed many small weddings in the last nine years and one thing has always been clear to me: it is not the size that makes a wedding special. It is the personal touches, the thoughtful planning, the interactions between the people and most importantly the love between the couple.

Any wedding, whether it is small or big, can be simple in it’s setup, but that does not mean that it has to be boring. The word ‘small’ in small weddings refers to the number of guests, not the complexity of the setup. In fact a small wedding can have every element that a big wedding has, only for less people. And that is where the key to a great small wedding lies: to plan each element as if it was a big wedding, just with smaller numbers. The opportunities for beauty and fun are endless!

So what is a small wedding?

In the wedding industry we differentiate between three types of small weddings:

  • A small wedding has between 30-60 guests.
  • A micro weddings has less than 20 people.
  • And then there are elopement weddings where the couple get married and celebrate by themselves or with just the witnesses. You can see an example for a stylish elopement wedding at Bailbrook House over here.
The Pig near Bath offers beautiful spaces for small weddings, outstanding food and very photogenic outdoor spaces.

What are the advantages of small weddings?

  • Less costs – naturally smaller weddings cost less. You have less guests to cater for, you don’t need to hire as big a venue and you will most likely only have one meal.
  • Less organization – smaller weddings are less organization, particularly if you choose to have the ceremony and reception in the same location.
  • More quality time – you get to spend more quality time with each guests.
  • Special discounts – with less guests it is easier to have a mid-week wedding. Many venues and suppliers offer special rates for mid-week weddings so go and ask them for their discounted rates!
  • More availability – a mid-week date offers you much more availability and choice in venues and suppliers as the most popular venues will be booked for weekend weddings one or two years in advance.
  • Budget for extras – by spending less money on the overall wedding you might have some spare funds for special extras like a magician who could come and stay for an hour during your drinks reception. Magicians are so much fun!
  • Less pressure – did you always fear the thought of a hundred people watching you walk down the aisle? Small wedding are perfect for people who are a little shy and prefer a more intimate atmosphere.
  • More meaningful photographs – from my own experience I manage to take more meaningful and intimate photographs at smaller weddings as the number of group shots is less, the reception room smaller and the order of the day is usually more relaxed. Also smaller weddings are often more personal and slower pace, all of this reflects in the photography!
“it is not the size that makes a wedding wonderful! It is the personal touches, the interactions between the people and most importantly the love between the couple.”

Some good ideas for your small weddings:

  • Create an intimate seating arrangement during the ceremony – having less guests at a ceremony means you can rearrange the seating. How about having your guests sitting in a circle around you while you exchange your vows?
  • Fancy restaurant – for small weddings consider booking yourself into a fancy restaurant like the Ivy or The Pig. They can provide you with a room for up to 20 or 30 people so you have privacy while dining in style.
  • Don’t ditch the dress – Just because you choose to have a small wedding you don’t have to ditch the dress! Go and have your dream dress, you can afford it with a smaller wedding! Companies like Needle & Thread offer the most luxurious and beautiful wedding dresses that costs significantly less than traditional wedding dresses.
  • Have fun – Just because you cut the number of guests you don’t have to cut all joy – have beautiful flowers for yourself as well as the dinner table! Hire fun transport to get from one place to another.
Having a smaller wedding party gives you the chance to hire special and more fun transport for everyone.

And here are the best small wedding venues in and around Bath for you:

Some of these venue can only accommodate ceremonies, some can also provide space for the reception and celebrations:

The Roman Baths can cater for pretty much every wedding, whether it is large or very small. This ceremony here consisted of five people: two grooms, two witnesses and one registrar. The backdrop is spectacular, no matter the number of people. Below is David’s five start Google review he wrote me:

“Betty photographed our wedding in June 2019 which took place at the Roman Baths. We chose her having looked at a number of photographers on line and we’re glad we did. The photos were wonderful. It was a small wedding – just the two of us and our witnesses – and she captured perfectly the love and affection we have for each other. We can’t recommend her highly enough.”
