Engagement Portrait at Cley Hill in Wiltshire

An engagement afternoon on Cley Hill

An engagement portrait session is not only there to give the couple a taste of being in front of the camera, but it can also serve the purpose of celebrating a place that is meaningful to the couple.

And this is what I did with Orianne and Chris, celebrating a place that they have been to many times and that plays a great part in their lives: Cley Hill in Wiltshire. Being outdoor lovers and owners of lovely labrador Dexter means that Cley Hill, which is on their doorstep, is a place they visit a lot.

Cley Hill offers the perfect opportunity for silhouette shots against the sky.

We met at the carpark and walked all the way up the hill first where we began our portrait session. That way I got a good impression of the place. I love being on top of a hill as you can get amazing perspectives with a lot of sky and nothing else in the background.

Cley Hill is a prominent hill to the west of Warminster in Wiltshire, England. The land is in Corsley parish and is owned by the National Trust.

There is a legend that the hill was formed by the devil, when he dropped a sack of earth with which he had planned to bury the town of Devizes. He had retrieved the earth from Somerset and was travelling to Devizes when he stopped to ask an old man the distance to the town. The man replied that he had been walking for years to reach Devizes, so the devil abandoned his plan.

I have to say, the view down wasn’t too bad either. What fabulous landscapes to include in the photographs! The fields as well as hills were covered in lines which gave the environment a special texture. That of course is something us wedding and portrait photographers are always happy about.

On the way down Cley Hill we stopped at many different locations, using the landscape, the nature around us as well as the perspectives. We finished with portraits in the very smooth looking cornfield. It was great to spend a little more time with Orianne and Chris! There is no doubt that the more comfortable everyone is with each other, the better the wedding photography turns out!

Prior Park Surprise Engagement Photos

Prior Park Surprise Engagement Photos

Catching up on some of last year’s special shoots, here is another surprise engagement session at Prior Park in Bath for you. I shot four surprise engagements there last summer!

Mohammed was very keep to propose to his beautiful girlfriend Yasmin and as always, when planning a surprise engagement, I put a lot of work and planning into the preparations to make sure I am at the right place at the right time without the girlfriend getting wind of pur plan.

“Thanks for everything, I really appreciate it! I’ve seen the pics, they are lovely, we love them!”

We succeeded, Yasmin said yes, was a little overwhelmed for a while and then did an amazing modelling job for me. The picture of the two of them in the sunshine with both the bridge as well as house in the background is one of my 2018 favourite shots!

Side note: the four pictures at the beginning of this blog post are of the real proposal. The two pictures at the very top of the blog post were posed.

This is such a good example for why it can be super useful to do an engagement portrait session! I met with them at their beautiful farm back in June and we concentrated on the field in front of the farm which also houses three ancient stones (a small Stonehenge). I very much guided them through it and they quickly relaxed and even realised that this can be fun. Engagement portraits are a fabulous way to get to know your photographer, see how she works and feel reassured that she is not going tp through you in the deep end, but help you look great on the pictures!

Surprise Engagement Photos at Prior Park

Surprise Engagement Photos at Prior Park

Sam and Taryn live in the United States and were coming over to the UK to see some of his family members. Sam saw this as a great opportunity to pop the question and contacted me a long time in advance of the trip. Like most guys who plan to pop the question he knew what he wanted, but not exactly how this could be translated into reality. I think this is where the photographer’s experience come in. I have shot a few surprise engagements now and planning exactly where the proposal will take place, where to stand, how to face each other and most importantly to keep me totally incognito takes some time and careful talking through.

“These are fantastic Betty, thank you so much!!!”

And we got there, as always. I arrived in good time before the couple, just in case they ran early. I set up, took some scenic pictures and waited for the love birds to arrive. I have to admit my heart was thumping when I finally spotted Sam and Taryn in the distance. It was not easy to keep an eye on them, but keep my camera hidden, just in case she turned towards me. I only shoot last minute, when he had started talking to her and had her full attention. Then I photograph the engagement moment, slowly walk closer and wait for that fun moment when he points me out to her. 🙂

If you are planning to propose to your girlfriend/boyfriend/partner and would like me to capture the moment, please get in touch through my form below and I can tell you more about the planning process.

Newton St Loe Engagement Portraits

Newton St Loe Engagement Portraits

I first met Alexandra when I photographed Georgia and Igor’s wedding the autumn before. Alex is Igor’s first cousin, she made an amazing bridesmaid when I first met her and I was thrilled when she emailed me almost immediately after Georgia & Igor’s wedding and asked me to be her wedding photographer too! *fistpump*

Thank you so much for our gorgeous engagement photos!

I have done a lot of engagement portrait sessions in Central Bath and felt a tad bored of them, so when Alex asked me where I suggest we do our shoot, I suggested beautiful Newton St Loe to her. This is a small village right on the door step of Bath, it has the world’s best farmshop, is beyond pretty and offers fantastic countryside views. It turned out to be an excellent choice because as a surprise Alex and Stefan brought their new puppy with them. Now they say never to work with kids or animals, but I’m sure you agree with me, this big eared bundle of energy is rather cute!
